What was the first videogame ever? Computer Space, Pong? According to E.G.M. July 1991 PGF (Pre-GameFan:), it was a 1958 Tennis/Pong type game invented by Willy Higinbotham! According to the magazine, the game was more sophisticated than Pong, and was on display for 2 years at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The game used discrete circuits, so I doubt Nicola will add it to MAME any time soon. ;-) -P-

A new and VERY disturbing bug in IE5 has been found today, one "which enables a malicious hacker to place a program on the victim's hard disk, to be executed at the next reboot." According to Guninski (who discovered the bug), "the attack can be launched by causing IE5 users to click on a hyperlink on a web page, but it also can be transmitted by e-mail to users of Microsoft's Outlook 98. The exploit places an executable program in an HTML Application file in a Window 95 or 98 computer's start-up folder. When the victim reboots his or her computer, the program will execute. So for instance you reboot Windows, that program is started and your HD gets formatted or something! Read the full story here, they also list a fix for this "bug". Thanks to avtr for the link.

I've not mentioned this before, but I feel I must now. There's a LOT of hype about a new WIP PSX emulator called ASSASSIN. It's been called the "bleem! killer", but at this moment it couldn't kill a fly. Why ? Because its core isn't even finished yet. No graphics emulation, no cd-rom emulation, no sound emulation, no nothing, if you will. You can see why I haven't mentioned this before. It might as well be a "fake emulator", then again it could be real. I've done my job (informing you about this "emu"), now it's your turn to make up your mind. The webmaster said that I will be sorry that I haven't supported ASSASSIN from the beginning (made me chuckle ;) and that "selected" webmasters (I ain't included) will get a beta when it's ready. To those webmasters I can say: "It's gonna be a loooooooooong wait" =)
Sony just lost another round to bleem!, when it was DENIED an injunction against bleem!. Thanks to Randyman for the news.

You probably heard about the MASSIVE earthquake that struck Turkey (at 3 AM Turkish time) today. It struck a VERY populated area (Istanbul/Bursa/Izmit) that also is also visited by many tourists. I have quite a number of relatives living in that region and I haven't heard from any of them. It's almost impossible to get calls through. My uncle and his family were at their house in Bursa, of which construction was only finished 3 months ago. At this moment, there are over 1,200 dead and thousands of injured. The deathtoll will most likely rise, since people were sound asleep at their homes. A lot of those appartement buildings collapsed, leaving many people dead or injured inside. May those people that were killed, rest in peace.
The Official Raine site has been updated with a very cool new look and layout! Even better, there are screenshots of Dogyuun (Toaplan 1992)!!! Lucky beta-testers like me can tell you this game ROCKS, even without sound. -P-
Heh... interviews don't slow J-ROM down - Arcade ROMs from Japan released Parodius, Hexion and a missing sound ROM from Mirai Ninja! Remember, these are new dumps and not yet playable on any emulators. -P-
Kinox recently interviewed J-ROM, the famous dumper from the land of the rising sun! :) In other interview news, Emulation Celebration interviewed Dave of DGen & DTMNT fame! -P-

I'm looking for the name of a certain hardtrance song, it contains only a few lyris but a totally MASSIVE beat, here are the lyrics: OCEANS APART/I'm still thinking of you/Tears in My Heart/My dreams torn in two. I heard this song at Club Shaft in Lommel, Belgium but I forgot to ask the DJ for the name of the song/group. If you have ANY information on this song, please mail me :) (Update I've heard 2 good possibilities: It's either a remixed Bryan Adams song (which I kinda doubt :) or a song by Milk Inc called OCEANS. If any of you have any of the above and can send me a one-minute snippet, of the girl singing the lyrics, I'll know which one it is :). Okay, it is OCEANS, but the version I heard had a massive beat and the voice was a bit overpitched. So, either it is another version or the DJ at Club Shaft kicks major ass :) Luckily I have it on a tape I got from the DJ and with a bit of luck I can post a small snippet soon :)
Both Sony and Nintendo are selling their consoles for $99 from today on, in the USA. Sure this nice, but why not add $100 and buy yourself a state-of-the-art console in 3 weeks time: Sega Dreamcast :) I know I will be =) Thanks to John Goodhue for the news.
Romcenter 1.61 released! RomCenter is a rom manager for various emulators (MAME/RAINE) and it scans zip files for roms, checks them, detects bad, missing and useless roms and repairs them. If you need any additional .dll files, be sure to check the RomCenter Site!

BTW - thanks Atila for the warez joke! I enjoyed my email as well. =) -P-

RAZE 1.01 released! This Z80 emulator gets a bugfix release, fixing 2 little bugs. It now works with NASM 0.98 and the reset code has been fixed, thanks to Neil Bradley.
Here are a few mails I received about the "warez link", I've removed all names of the people that mailed me. Some mails contain profanity, please be warned :) I will treasure these mails till the day I die =)
I received my subscription copy of EDGE last Friday and I finished it already :) The first person to mail me will get this magazine from me, just include your address and I'll ship it your way, free of charge. This month's edition has lots of Dreamcast news, KOEI's PSX2 screenshots, a Colin McRae Rally 2 feature and lots more. (UPDATE - It's going to Richard Bannister :)
About yesterday's "Warez link": The link that I have provided (file:///c|/) is COMPLETELY HARMLESS because it allows YOUR browser to show YOU the contents of YOUR C: drive. If you change the C to D it will show you the contents of your D: drive. Try opening a picture or text file on your harddisk using your browser and you will see the following in Netscape: file:///c|/directory/file.ext and this in IE5 c:\directory\file.ext. You can stop threatening me with lawsuits now for "exposing your HD to everyone on the net" :) Why are you clicking on warez links btw ???
Pete's TNT OpenGL driver 1.20 released! This OpenGL plugin for TNT cards and other OpenGL cards for use with PSEmu Pro has had another update, new things are: removed all MFC stuff, Win2000 support, some bug-fixes for non-TNT cards, small optimizations. Thanks to LeRoutier for the news.

More info can be obtained from the TRWin Site, thanks to PRoToCoL for the news.

WHOAH!! This has to be the biggest collection of warez I have ever seen ;-) Before you mail me, PLEASE check where it points to ....
Here's my HotRod SE review, the SE version of the stick has 6 buttons. I have the live action video, but it's unedited and in MPEG II format so it's kinda big. Once ElvisP edits that and it's a good size, we'll put it up for download :) One small note, if you're gonna buy the stick, make sure you buy the Hotrod SE (the one with 6 buttons), you'll be glad you did.
Knuckles Chaotix 32x released at Genesis Power! Now if someone would just make a 32x emu... =) -P-
Some general notes: To everyone who's been mailing me videogame links - thanks, but this is an *emulation* site, so I don't want to overload the news with that stuff. To compaq98 - I replied to your mails, not sure you've been getting them. -P-
I finally got my Neo Geo Pocket Color and it's AWESOME!!! Here's my review if you'd like a more in-depth opinion. Throw away your Gameboys folks! :) -P-

My impressions of TRWIN: No Sound in commercial games (although that's listed in the FAQ), I tried MARIO64 with it and I get about 10 fps during gameplay on my PII-266. Graphics are top-notch though, good stuff. The faster your system, the better the results are. The GUI sucks though ;)
TRWIN released! Here it is, the new speedy N64 emulator that uses DirectX. Go to the TRWIN Site (hosted by EmuHQ) for more info on this N64 emulator. I'll give you my impression on it in a few minutes.
Australia rules (sometimes)! The OZ government has just passed a law that LEGALISES reverse engineering :) Reverse Engineering is VERY useful for emulator authors. Thanks to Schmoopy for the link
Trivia Time: Did you know ... that PSEmu Pro (the PSX emu) is downloaded more than 2,000 times a day ?! That Lev hosts more than 50% of the big sites out there ? That on boring days, I download more than 2GB a day ? That I type most of my updates in CuteHTML or Notepad ? That Jose, Guru-Choc, Paul101 and I started out on the same host back then - Threadnet ? That this site has had more visitors than the entire population of Belgium (not quite, but still ;) ? That emulation is bigger than ever ? That my nephew is almost 7 months old ? That my coffee has too much milk ? That I don't like too much milk in my coffee ? That I'll be doing more Trivia Time soon ? That we'll also be doing a "special word" soon ? That in the first installment of "special word" you can hear me say PAISAN in an Italian accent ? That this will happen tomorrow ? That I'm sick of typing right now ?
My regular mail account is working again, so you don't have to use atila@retrogames.com anymore, although it will be monitored :)
This weekend the Classic Gaming Expo will be held in Las Vegas, thanks to XiX for the news.
Here's thinker: ***** BUG WARNING ***** Wife 1.0 has an undocumented bug. I couldn't believe this next story, it's pretty damn scary: The Kansas Board of Education rejected evolution as a scientific principle Wednesday, dealing a victory to religious conservatives who are increasingly challenging science education in U.S. schools. Those religious people conservatives just proved the evolution theory, if you ask me: they went from "dumb to dumber". Evolution, baby! Click here for the full story, thanks to Peran for the link. (NB, my comments should be viewed in a sarcastic way ;)
PSX.IGN.COM is reporting that the Japanese release date for the PSX2 is January 23rd, 2000. The price is 45,000 YEN ($391) and games will sell for 8,000 YEN ($70 !!). Chances are that US prices will be even higher and at those prices, they won't sell much (or maybe they will, I'll have a DreamCast anyway ;) ....
Pugsy has updated his Cheat Site, he's added 2000 or so cheats for games added in MAME 0.35 and 0.36 Beta 1. Download the new cheat file from Pugsy's Cheat Page. Thanks to PRoToCoL for the news.
I've just received my alpha copy of The Impact: WHOAH! Eventhough my ATI RAGE PRO was unable to show me the goods in hardware OpenGL mode, the software mode still kicked ass :) Because of this, I was unable to make any screenshots (thank you, ATI), but once I get my voodoo card it should be better ;) Prepare to be amazed once it's released.
Sonikku_a is giving away a copy of SOUL CALIBUR for the Sega Dreamcast, all you have to do is beat Super Mario Bros. 3 in the fastest possible time :) Full details are at Sonniku_a's Site.
Philips will be releasing their own portable MP3 player soon. This little player will play BOTH the SDMI and MP3 format -- very good news indeed :) SDMI is the "industry" standard, which means that you pay for the files you download and then play them. The "industry" seems to forget that there are independant labels out there and independant artist who solely rely on MP3 as a medium, they would have NO benefit (or interest) in this SDMI feature, so it's good to see that Philips supports them too.
Bernie Stolar has left the building! You read that correctly, Bernie Stolar (CEO of Sega of America) was axed yesterday, out of the blue. Thanks to Bo Hyun for the mail.

A man in Germany was beaten to death by other people in a bar, because he wouldn't switch off his cellphone. He was getting calls all the time and when people asked him to switch it off, he refused. Sure, a ringing phone is obnoxious at times, but to kill someone over it ?!

A company called ICARUS PRODUCTIONS has been able to bump up the colors for the Gameboy Color to over 2,000 ! Just don't expect this technique to be used on sprites in games because apparently it is VERY processor intensive. Things it can be used for are detailed title screens, character artwork, still cutscenes, and other, non-animated game screens. It doesn't work on emulators (yet ?), click here for the full story. Thanks to scienide for the link

Seems summer is the premier time of year to (try to) pass legislation that will work out bad for us, the consumer. Infoworld reports that "a group that works to unify state laws this week passed the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act (UCITA) legislation, which is widely opposed by software consumer advocates, software developers, and IT organizations." What this basically means is the following: "The legislation will theoretically allow software vendors to repossess software by disabling it remotely, and to disclaim warranties. It will also prevent the transfer of software licenses from one party to another without vendor permission, and will outlaw reverse engineering." Read more about this here, thanks to |pogo| for the link

The Dboy Site has been updated with a bit of news, Boukichi apparently has written a piece for Game Lab (?) Magazine (on sale August 17th) about "How to make an emulator" and "Why DBoy has been discontinued". From what I've gathered from the translation by Translingo, is that Boukichi is very sad, but he felt he had no other choice. Again, this is a rough interpretation, so if you can provide me a better one, please mail me.

Here's what can happen to you if your system is infected with Back Orifice 2000, these 2 pics cracked me up. The 2 pics are huge (about 600k total) but the look on the dude's face is well worth the wait. Priceless :) Thanks to Michael Horton for the link
Office97 users beware! A new hole has been discovered in the suite, which SERIOUSLY compromises your system's security. It's related to Microsoft's "JET" database engine, ZDNET reports that "the security hole does not involve macros but rather database queries which trigger the execution of commands on the user's computer system. A dangerous query can occur in a spreadsheet formula, a field in a wordprocessor document, or a data file used by a database-enabled application". Here's the scary part, "The security hole can be used to inject a virus or a Trojan horse program, such as Back Orifice, into the victim's system. It can also cause the system to transmit sensitive data, including encryption keys, credit card numbers, etc., to a malicious third party". Click here to read the full article, a fix for the problem is also given.
Tim Eckel has released an update (0.36d) to his MAME frontend, Arcade@Home. You can download it here. Thanks to everyone that mailed me!
