  • The funny thing is, in some parts of the world, it's already April 1st :)

  • Our host, ztnet.com, has accepted an offer from Simplenet to buy his company. The total amount of cash involved is $1,300,000 This means that from tomorrow on, we will be hosted by Simplenet (let's hope we don't get their "terms of service"). Lev was quoted saying: "F*ck emulation.. I want the money.."

  • Zoop has updated his Meka Site with the news that Phantasy Star will have music emulation for Phantasy Star since Meka now correctly emulates the YM2413 chip found inside the Sega Master System !! There are 2 mp3s online now, where you can listen to the sound. Although these were encoded from a real SMS, Meka will have the same sound :)

  • Make sure you have a midi of The Eagles' Hotel California playing when you read (=sing) these lyrics ;-) Thanks to wook for the link

  • More Melissa news :) The "author" of Melissa seems to be a notorious hacker and virii spreader, he now claims he was framed and that it was possible because of AOL's lack of security. His site was hosted on AOL.

  • Interplay have announced that MDK2 will be launched on the same day as the U.S Dreamcast!

  • Nintendo 2001 rumours: It's supposed to have a 128-bit, 400 Mhz CPU with a custom (writeable) 1.5 GB DVD drive. The controller is to have vibrating buttons (I can see the lawsuits coming ;) and a lot more which you can read here

  • MEMA beta 9 versions released! J. Los Arcos has released the Spanish translations of MAME, there's a full build, a neogeo-free build and a neogeo-only build. There's also a MEMA32 beta 8 at the author's site.

  • As you may know, UserFriendly.org is being sued by (this is my GUESS -ed.) Microsoft because of negative connotations within your cartoon regarding [our client], and if Userfriendly doesn't comply; we [the lawyers] will initiate a suit to claim damages for libel and defamation. What this means is that Micro$oft is not happy with the fact that they are being "put down" in the cartoons. From today on, we will support User Friendly in any way we can. Click here to go to the "SUPPORT USER FRIENDLY" website !

  • TMAME 0.35 b9 released! Geyik released this Turkish version of MAME, arkadaslar, lütfen burayi tiklayin TMAME'i yükleme icin :)

  • Someone mailed me about EmuTV a while back, I lost your mail, could you please mail me again ?

  • I just wanted to remind everyone that Retrogames will be ONE YEAR OLD tomorrow and that isn't an April Fool's :)

  • I got a mail today from John Stinger, webmaster of the Japanese Computer Emulation Centre. He covers a lot of systems we don't, including the X68000, MSX and PC88 (great systems !!) He has lots of info on those systems, including games you can use with the emulators ! - Atila -

  • Coinster will have another Retro Radio out tomorrow ! - The Fox -

  • Here's an unofficial MAME32 0.35 beta 9 compiled by CJC, who also compiled the last version for win32 (beta 8). Again, do not bother the MAME team about this release.

  • I have no idea what happened, could be a trick since tomorrow is April 1st, or could be real. I know as much as you do. - Atila -

  • Retrogames doesn't often mention Daves Classics, but this time is an exception. As a site it is/was one of the greatest ever. Reports indicate that an unknown hardware manufacturer has sued UGO (Dave's host)for copyright infringement, and as a result the site is completely gone. It is also believed that the whole thing *could* be an April Fool's joke... Thanks JoseQ for the info. -P-

  • Not much going on right now... Anyway - Welcome to Foxy! I'm sure Retrogames will benefit greatly from his help. Also, just in case anyone tried to mail me today, my hotmail account appears to be messed up right now. So try again later I guess. -P-

  •   Tuesday, March 30th 1999 - Last updated @ 22:56 CET

  • The Danji Site has been updated, but I can't read it, since it's in Korean. Thanks to Katharsis for the tidbit

  • The Fox has updated his Comment's page, he's closing down emuunlim.com and joining Retrogames! Read his last statement to find out WHY he's doing it.

  • ClrMAME 1.30 released! From the homepage: ClrMame is a little tool for Win9x/NT4.0. It cleans your M.A.M.E. directories. It reports missing games, roms and samples, wrong sized/spelled/unnecessary files ... and much more. Click here to see what's new in version 1.30

  • Rodimus Prime has updated his A/PMAME compiles, here goes: PMAME B9/C core, PMAME B9/ASM core, AMAME B9/C core and AMAME B9/ASM core. Be sure to read the rodimus.txt found inside the zip and then use our MAME messageboard to comment (bad pun intended ;) on this!!

  • MAME 0.35 Beta 9 binary, compiled by Bman2 !

  • Fighting Force 2, slated for Dreamcast, will be shown at the E3 in May. Core said that a brandnew 3D engine with lots of "eye-popping visual effects" will be used for this game. Yummy :)

  •   Monday, March 29th 1999 - Last updated @ 23:30 CET

  • UltraHLE Control Panel 1.7 released, if you're missing any needed DLL files, click here. Go to EmuHQ to find out all the new things :)

  • Remember that Sega-CD emu I mentioned I while back ? Well, Leah has got Lunar emulated now (fully) emulated now on her unnamed Sega-CD/Mega-CD emu. The sound is not good enough yet, but it's being worked on. And since it's nameless, you can submit your name for the Sega-CD emu here, kinda like a small contest, although you can't win anything ;)

  • Compliments of Zoop :)

  • Namco has updated his site with a load of new Jaguar Roms, click here to get them :)

  • Eidolon's Inn has been updated, now including the world's first Genesis ROM Patch section and the most complete Sega technical resource section. With heaps of other info available at this site, this is a must visit! He even has a 32X Devkit for those who are interested in emulating it ;)

  • MAMEWIP Page updated with luvverly pics of Super Locomotive, Gaplus, Sindbad and Yamato!!

  • The new A/PMAME has support for 26 more games than the official MAME versions. These are most likely the games that were commented in the MAME source. These are incomplete and VERY buggy, use at your own risk!!

  • An APPLE reseller was bombed last night in Athens, Greece. The police thinks the NATO attacks on Serbia were the motives for the attacks. (I wanted to make a funny comment here, but I think the feds will probably arrest me if I did :)

  • Microsoft has a nice surprise in store for people using WIN95 or WinNT who want to use the Windows Update feature, you'll need to INSTALL IE5, complete with that security risk we mentioned yesterday. Click here for more info

  • If you have a PalmPilot, you may soon enjoy Gameboy games on it :) Maven is writing a GameBoy emulator for it and a demo that runs Tetris should be out in about 2 weeks. Click here to read an interview that PalmPilot InfoCenter did with Maven.

  • Melissa, a new "virus" was released this weekend. It's basically a mail with and adultsites list. But it multiplies itself 50 times and it keeps going, so it's not a real virus, but it can still "kill" servers because of the load. Click here to read an article on Melissa and how to take precautions against it. This is mainly an Outlook (Express) problem ....

  • I've added XGL200, the ultimate (?) glide wrapper for use with UltraHLE. This wrapper gave me the best results on my ATI XPERT@WORK, a smooth 25 fps. It works with LOTS of different chipsets, chances are it'll work correctly with your card too.

  • XMAME 0.35 Beta 8.1 released !! Upto par with the dos version, you can read the changes here. For more info, check out the XMAME Site

  • Almost forgot! Killer Clown & Roclobsta have created a MAME bug reporting/collecting site & message board. They are currently enrolling volunteers to "adopt" several games to test with each MAME beta. The idea is to provide MAME team with an accurate, centralized & complete bug report as quickly as possible by using a large force of testers. I think this a long overdue idea, and hopefully many people will apply and the MAME devs will approve and make use of this endeavor. -P-

  • Apollo69 has released the Ninja Masters fix batch file. You ONLY need this if you replaced the old v2 ROM, and no longer have a copy of it. This batch file will actually repair the new v2. If you look further down this page, you'll find the entire ROM file - BUT this batch file is just 27k, and the entire ROM is 1.7mb. -P-

  • Mike Stulir was kind enough to let me know about the latest episode of Back in Time. They have some great upcoming episodes as well, so stay tuned! -P-

"This episode features an extensive interview with Curt Vendel, curator of the Atari Historical Society. Curt and I discuss all aspects of classic Atari gaming and computing, as well as emulators, ROMs, some of the recent classic game updates, and some fascinating prototype Atari game/computer equipment that never made it to the market. Curt will probably be one of the largest historical gaming exhibitors at Classic Gaming Expo later this year, and he talks about his plans for that show. This is the longest episode to date. (Slightly over 40 minutes.)"

  • Andrew Gow sent this neogeo.drv update for KBMAME. It will allow Ninja Masters to load normally with the correct sound ROMs. -P-

  • Not much to tell... Visited some relatives, and lo and behold there was a NeoGeo MVS in a local pizza shop. I played Shock Troopers 2nd Squad, and it's really awesome. =) -P-

  • AntiRiad, the author of RAINE, is having major hardware troubles, he thinks it's probaly mainboard (gmb-p55ips) related. If you are a bit of a technician and you are based in the UK, you can mail AntiRiad here.

  • A group of students that failed a computer course is sueing the school. All 12 students failed a 1997 course which was supposed to certify them to work with Microsoft software programs. They were told that if you could "point and click", they would probably complete the course succesfully. Click here for the full story.

  • The NeoGeo Pocket Color will be available to U.S Customers from April on, from the SNK Website. So you won't have to wait until September to buy the thing!! 2 games that you can play on this handheld (which has awesome specs, btw) are Fatal Fury: First Contact and Samurai Spirits 2 (= Samurai Shodown 2), click here for pics.

  • IE5 has a security flaw that Microsoft calls a "feature". Remote servers can now read what's on your clipboard through a small piece of ActiveX/Java code. Now, you must be REAL glad yo installed IE5 now, huh ? Click here to read more about the story AND find out on how to disable this "feature"

  • The weather in The Netherlands is VERY nice today, I might be heading out later in my car, "2 miles an hour, so everybody sees me" =)

  • Meka wasn't released yesterday, because Zoop was fixing up the GUI and removing a few bugs. Zoop has now confirmed that Meka (his Sega Master System Emulator) will be out April 3rd.

  • Ultra.ini 1.0.13 for UltraHLE released! There is a HUGE list of new things, but the most important things are that Snowboard Kids is now fully playable and Silicon Valley is (almost) full playable. Check Arcade@Home for more info.

  • Yes, I know it's getting late :) -A-

  •   Saturday, March 27th 1999 - Last updated @ 11:59 CET

  • Just confirmed: American 117 Stealth Bomber shot down over Yugoslavia... Violence belongs in video games. Nuff said. -P-

  • To help out with the Ninja Masters problem, here is the good v2 ROM (1.7mb). -P-

  • If anyone still needs KBMAME (Unofficial MAME build by Deimos), here is the ASM core version, and here is the C core version. This is the best NeoGeo emu IMO - just like regular MAME but with savestates, 16 bit color for all games, emulated overclocking and other cool stuff. -P-

  • NOTICE: The Ninja Masters sound fix included an INCORRECT v2 ROM. ONLY replace the v1 ROM, because the old v2 was good. If you need more information, visit Apollo69. Do not worry if you no longer have your old v2 ROM - a batch file fix is on the way... Anyone stupid enough to flame Apollo69 on our message boards for this one small mistake will be INSTANTLY banned. -P-

  • The official Dreamcast launch date has been set to 9/9/1999, Irijimari-san mentioned that the next Dreamcast models will have a DVD-drive. Sega is also talking to Iomega for a DC Zip Drive. NGO also reports that the DC sales have gone down a bit this week, with "only" 9k+ units sold. And to round things off on this Dreamcast report, Sega is working on a new Naomi fighting game ( can you smell the DC port ? ) called WAFFUPU, it won't be using rounds, but points ! So if you get 5 points, you win. Somehow reminds me of martial arts tournaments :)

  • Andrew Gow sent me a neogeo.drv for use with KBMAME, it supports the correct romsets for KOF98, Waku Waku 7, Pulstar and Ninja Masters

  • Steven Livingston has sent me a translation of the Dboy 0.47 docs: DBOY 0.47 (Kasumi the serious joker commemorative release?), changed how DBOY auto-recognizes a SGB cart. (rom), changed SGB coding , GB drawing timer (a display method) and corrected history in Dboy.txt

  • Nintendo's Gameboy is about to be 0wned, click here for news on the NeoGeo Pocket color!!

  • Unofficial MAME32 beta 8 released! Please do not bother the MAME team with questions about this release. Thanks go to CJC ;)

  • Sigh... New Bleem! demo now available. It's a "world" version which plays games from all countries, has more compatability and color movie playback. Still no sound (aside from CD) or 3D support. I personally can't try Bleem! because unlike all other emus I've used, it won't work on my system. And yes, I have DX6.1 and latest drivers etc.... -P-

  •   Thursday, March 25th 1999 - Last updated @ 22:42 CET

  • Sony has now CONFIRMED that it will be using Linux as the PSX2 developement platform.

  • The RIAA is saying that MP3 could be the reason why sales have dropped as much as they have (well doh!), they released a report yesterday and this is one of the better parts of it: "Potentially, the rise of the Internet as a free entertainment center, and the accompanying availability of free MP3 music files, could be contributing factors". Instead of using MP3 to their advantage, they want to destroy it. Click here for the full story, thanks wook :)

  • Virtual Boy Emu update: David Tucker is trying to hook up his VB controller to his PC and I think he needs some help since he writes: "If anyone has any experience wiring up a SNES pad to the parallel port, would you contact me. • Bill Gates was arrested in 1977 in New Mexico, click here for the mugshots :) Nice one, Deej ;)

  • The response to the released bleem! demo is not really good. People really wanted to see a demo with hardware 3D support, not a version which does less than the leaked beta from a while ago. This was not a smart release, if you ask me. A version with 3D support would have been better, even if it was time limited or something, you still could have disabled the sound. People would have gotten an idea on how well a game would look on their system. Now they just see what they've seen for quite some time now. Check the general messageboard for bleem! posts, they're (almost) all negative

  • Digital Arcade and Data Potato are back!

  • bleem! released! This version is a demo version without hardware 3D support and such. Here it is, the "ultimate" PSX emulator, here is the US version, the European version and the Japanese version. If you are in the USA, download the US version, etc etc. Click here to read the readme.txt For more info or to pre-order your copy of bleem!, please go to the bleem! site

  • Emulators Unlimited have reopened the UltraHLE Site. This does not necessarily mean that a new version of UHLE will be released. It will feature an interview with RealityMan next week and a little surprise too :)

  • Shane Monroe has released a new Retro Radio, this is the longest show to date (almost 47 minutes!). One of the features this time is an interview with Neil Bradley, of Retrocade fame!

  • It's coming ....... (nb. I was talking about bleem!)

  •   Sunday, March 21th 1999 - Last updated @ 23:24 CET

The zip file is 6 MB big, this the the full, uncut version, it has explicit lyrics in it. But if MTV plays it, I guess it not too bad =) It's basically about these 2 homies cruisin' the streets for girls, RealPlayer G2 required :)

  • Wanna play Galaga 88 & Pacmania with MAME? And how about a fixed ASM core for NeoGeo games for 0.35 beta 7 while we're talking? Well, HERE it is, courtesy of Emulatronia! Be sure to use 16-bit color with the Namco System 1 games. :) NOTE: You must use the DIPs to turn test mode off, and Galaga88 appears to not start due to a "RAM error." And the driver is very, very slow. If you don't have a fast PC (P2-300 absolute minimum) you will get very low fps. -P-

Mortal Kombat Trilogy shows up the title screen, vnes64 "works" (tried with Zelda 1) and Virtual Springfield Site also displays some nice things. All these RDP roms use the sprite engine of the n64. My emulation for it is very buggy. The reason why I haven't fixed them yet is that I am going to rewrite my RDP graphics core. Not only that, he will try to get a new RDP core to work with Direct 3D.

  • Sean Palmer mailed me about a mail that going around. The subject is "It takes guts to say God", the attachment will format your C: drive, be careful!!

  • *SIGH*, VR32mame is a shameless hack of KBMAME. I was reading the general messageboard and saw a post by Deimos (author of KBmame) about VR32MAME. He noticed the same errors with VR32mame as there are with his KBMAME, he unpacked the .exe and saw his own error messages!! Then Deimos posted this on our board: I compared the unpacked vrmameb6.exe to my unpacked kbmamea7. They are exactly the same size. And the important parts are in the same places. Why is save/restore not working then? Because he "spaced out" the string I used to build the filename. Oh, and he also "spaced" the string "neogeo.drv" so that the dynamic driver won't work. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't remove the default keyboard mapping because there was nothing visible to hex-edit. So, if the author of VR32MAME would like to clear this up please, just mail me

  • Nullsoft, makers of WinAMP, is being sued for $20,000,000 by PlayMedia Systems. PlayMedia Systems is a Los Angeles company that develops and licenses audio and video technology, and owns the "AMP Audio MPEG Player" software engine that decodes MPEG files. The company insists Nullsoft's player uses its AMP code. According to the suit, Frankel licensed the AMP code from Tomislav Uzelac, now the director of media systems at PlayMedia Systems. The suit claims that Uzelac granted a nonexclusive license to Frankel, in exchange for a royalty fee in September 1997. This is true, but Nullsoft switched to their Nitrane decoding engine a while back, I don't know what the fuss is about :) Let's see what happens, here's the full story. Thanks wook !

  • Seems we've been had by Intel once again ... The Register is reporting that "An architect who currently works for Intel US has now confirmed what we were beginning to suspect all along -- every .25 micron Intel chip has the processor serial number (PSN). The chip designer, who revealed the news under strict conditions of anyonymity, said: "Any .25 micron core including the PII, all Celerons and all current Xeons have had serialisation ever since .25 micron technology started." The exception is the .25 Tillamook P5 MMX, he said. I have to say that that AMD-K7 is starting to look REAL good now. Click here for the full story, thanks to Phil Baxter for the news.

This is the best Mod player out there, it has a zillion features like Surround Sound, reverb, and bass expansion. It's fully configurable and it rocks! That's right, you can use your winamp plugins with Modplug :) Just to show you how good mods can sound, here are 2 files by Jay! (one of my fav composers), who is a member of RBI and Aeon. Then Chemical explains what happened (server upgrade and all) so I let it go. My mom calls, she says she wants to go visit some relatives over in Belgium so we did. I spent the next 7 hours driving back and forth. I get back to the office and find out my PII-266 is almost dead. And now I'm updating in the middle of the night :)

  • Well, for some reason I'm having trouble viewing some of our hosted sites (like MAME WIP for example) but luckily News-u-lator posted Gridle's latest news. There were no new pics, but just the following text: -P-

"Bryan McPhail has sent in his dec0 driver, with Boulder Dash support added and Sly Spy and Midnight Resistance now have full sound and music. All this was possible to do because he also added support for the Hu6280 CPU into MAME. Aaron Giles has updated the Namco System 1 sound system, merging it with the other Namco system. He also added 16-bit sampling support for it. Tatsuyuki Satoh has sped up the C 68k core, and Ernesto Corvi has updated Pacland to support sound. Mike Coates has fixed several bugs with the ASM 68k core (Shock Troopers should work now). Jürgen Buchmüller has fixed a RETN opcode bug in the Z80 core."

I fixed a bug which leads to strange length-fixing-messages after fixing a wrong spelled file. This bug could lead to other currently unknown and not reported sideeffects. (Thank you Andrew !) By the way: If you have problems while starting ClrMame (MFC42.DLL crashes) you'll need a new version of this dll. I'm using version 6.00.8267.0. (Roman Scherzer, ClrMAME author)

  • Good luck with that NT problem Atila. I have no idea how to help. :( -P-

  •   Tuesday, March 2nd 1999 - Last updated @ 22:19 CET

  • The error I get in NT is the following: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000005). Press OK to terminate the application. See the weird thing is, certain programs work (like ACDSee) but mIRC give me that error too. All programs in the system tray give the same at start up. Even the NT Explorer takes like almost a minute to load, same goes for the Control Panel. I'm going to remove my card from my system and reboot. Maybe that'll help. -A-

  • Father Death has just updated his editorial, he talks about Intel and the PIII and about EGM Magazine.

  • I need some help from someone that REALLY knows Windows NT. I removed my "audio line->soundblaster 16 or AWE32" from "control panel->multimedia->devices" because I wanted to install new drivers. After rebooting, almost everything hung. All programs in my systray won't start, systray.exe won't even start. I can hardly run any programs, they all give the same error at startup. I tried to reinstall the SB drivers, but I can even run "control panel->multimedia", it just won't execute. So I need some help, can I add the drivers manually? How to let NT4 know I have an SB in my machine ? -A-

There's also another N64 emulator being released next week, which also uses dynamic recompilation and will be almost equally advanced.
